Citigroup 2007 Citizenship Report and Brochure
Citigroup Inc. (Citi) is a diversified global financial services holding company headquartered in New York City whose businesses provide a broad range of financial services to consumer and corporate clients, including consumer banking and credit, corporate and investment banking, securities brokerage and wealth management. Citi has more than 200 million customer accounts, employs approximately 370,000 people, does business in more than 100 countries, and processes more than $1 trillion of transactions every day. more
Project scope and execution
Framework:CR was engaged to direct and implement the development of Citi’s 2007 Citizenship Report. The effort began with an evaluation of Citi’s past reports and a benchmark analysis of competitor and best-in-class communications. The analysis led to several key recommendations, including:
- to combine the existing Diversity and Citizenship reports and the Citi Foundation report into one comprehensive Citizenship report,
- to reduce report length and promote readability by focusing on quantitative results wherever possible;
- to develop a concise Citizenship brochure to summarize Citizenship priorities and accomplishments.
The report was structured around Citi’s Citizenship themes of microfinance and microentrepreneurship; financial education; and the environment/climate change. We also gathered data to meet the reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), including the draft Financial Services Sector Supplement. We interviewed executives, met with employees across the organization, and built out case studies as part of the report drafting and editing process. Other aspects of the project included working with Citi designers to establish visual themes and presentation, evaluating Citi’s website materials for congruence with the report, compiling a GRI content index, and creating a report distribution strategy.
Outcomes: Reaching more stakeholders
The project was very successful, especially with regard to the development of the Citizenship Brochure. We had proposed this print piece as a way to facilitate stakeholder access to Citizenship information, a goal that was met almost immediately following the brochure’s release. The brochure highlights key Citizenship information in a lively, visually engaging, and easy-to-read format. It is designed to fit into a standard #10 envelope and can also be placed into existing brochure holders in Citi branches. The brochure’s versatile nature lends itself to broad distribution in press kits, community relations information packets, at conferences, in Citi’s banks and offices, and at recruiting events. More than 165,000 copies have been distributed to date.

Project scope and execution
Framework:CR was engaged by Symantec in 2006. For the past two years, we have provided guidance, research, and support on various corporate responsibility strategy and communications issues. Specifically, we:
- counseled Symantec on structuring corporate responsibility programs, building the business case for corporate responsibility performance and communications, and soliciting external stakeholder input via the formation of an external advisory council;
- evaluated Symantec’s corporate responsibility website, proposed both structural and content-related revisions, and implemented site redrafting and redesign; and
- led the development of Symantec’s Communication on Progress, required as part of Symantec’s commitment as a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact
Framework:CR is currently leading the development of Symantec’s first corporate responsibility report, to be released in late summer 2008. As part of this process, we conducted a materiality analysis in partnership with the Symantec reporting team and external advisory council. The analysis resulted in the identification of priority issues to be highlighted in the report.
Additionally, in support of a new employee engagement initiative around corporate responsibility at Symantec, Framework:CR is developing quarterly internal newsletters that will raise employee awareness and encourage personal action.
Outcomes: Steady progress to date
Symantec has been successful in progressively expanding and integrating corporate responsibility throughout the company. This commitment was recognized in 2007, when Symantec was listed on both the DJSI and the FTSE4Good.

Granite Construction 2006–2007 Environment & Community Report to Stakeholders
Granite Construction Incorporated (Granite) is one of the largest heavy civil contractors in the United States and is a major producer of sand, gravel, asphalt, and other aggregate-based construction materials. Simply put, Granite is in the business of building and connecting communities. Headquartered in Watsonville, California, Granite employs more than 5,000 people and, in 2007, reported revenues of $2.7 billion. more
Project scope and execution
Framework:CR was engaged in 2006 to prepare an initial environmental brochure to succinctly lay out Granite’s environmental vision and strategy and reiterate the company’s core values. The brochure was published in March 2007 and can be downloaded here.
The overwhelmingly positive response to the brochure among company managers, employees, and community contacts set the stage for Framework:CR to help Granite develop its 2007 environment and community report. This publication builds on the strategic platform and objectives established in the brochure and presents more in-depth information around Granite’s environmental and social actions and accomplishments. As part of the development process for the report, we worked with Granite to create a content outline and assist with data consolidation and organization. We then drafted and edited the document and coordinated the design process.
Outcomes: Raising awareness, building momentum
The report has been well-received and is fulfilling its central purpose of raising internal awareness, support for, and excitement around the company’s environmental and community initiatives. The report, along with the previous’ year’s brochure, is an excellent example of how a gradual and iterative process of communication can be a powerful force for change and inspiration within an organization.
